Saw’s BBQ: Turnip Greens

Saw’s is a must visit if you’re in the Birmingham, Alabama area. Here’s a great recipe to get some greens on your plate.

Ingredients:

1) 4 oz Bacon

2) 2 1/2 lbs Turnip Greens

3) 1 yellow onion

4) 1 1/2 qt Water

5) 1 tsp. Lawry’s Seasoned Salt

6) 1 C of Regular Barbecue Sauce

7) 1 tsp. Fresh Ground Black Pepper

Directions

  1. Cut Bacon #1 into 1/4 in bits, add to a large pot and cook until it’s nice and crispy (be careful not to overcook though).

  2. Julienne your Onions #3 and add to the pot and cook in the bacon grease until soft.

  3. Rinse and then chop Turnip Greens #2.

  4. In the same large pot, Add Turnip Greens, Water #4, Lawry’s #5, Barbecue Sauce #6 and Black Pepper #7.

  5. Bring it to a boil and then let it simmer for about 1.5 hrs or until the greens are tender.

  6. Play with the seasoning until it meets your desired taste.
